Background information on Schwannoma [When available]

Schwannomas, also referred to as Neurilomas, are slow-growing central nervous system tumours arising from the supporting cells of peripheral nerves, which include cranial and spinal nerve roots). The disease is one of middle and old age that grows at the margins of the peripheral nerves, displacing the nerve's main body.

The vestibulocochlear (acoustic) nerve is the most commonly affected, see acoustic neuroma. Other cranial nerve and spinal nerve roots are less commonly involved.

Surgical resection is usually curative, though there is a risk of functional damage due to interference with the nerve.
